What is the „PerLen-Konzept“?

The PerLen-Konzept for teaching competence and process orientation according to Rüdiger Iwan and Dominik Bick was developed in cooperation with the LPM Department of Teaching and Learning Development at Schools – Designing and Accompanying Learning Processes.
„Das PerLen-Konzept®“ (Making personal learning experiences possible and visible) is used to develop and identify subject-specific and generic competences. It comprises a moderated, social-cooperative work process that opens up a new way of communicating about learning between participants and records the results in the form of four modules that build on each other and are differentiated by colour. The PerLen-Konzept includes at least three different PerLes.
The Learning-PerLe serves to become aware of and visualise all learning experiences associated with activities (actions) (excellently suited for the beginning of the school year and for getting to know the new learning group).
The Subject-PerLe can be a further and new form of performance record in all schools – as an alternative to examinations and written work.
The Job-PerLe opens up perspectives on one’s own professional future. It is used in applications for internships and training at applicant markets organised especially for this purpose and brings the whole concept to a preliminary climax.
In a common writing pad (Leporello), the participants work on four differently coloured modules, together they each form a PerLe. The uniform writing pad makes the uniform structure of the concept clear.
Module 1 stands for the recollection and collection of personally significant learning experiences (The Learning-PerLe), professional contents (The Subject-PerLe) or competences (The Job-PerLe) and are written on the blue sheet.
Module 2 stands for the reflection (or proflexion in the case of the Job-PerLe) of a learning experience selected from the collection and is written on yellow sheets.
Module 3 stands for the visualisation of the previously reflected experience or for the development of the content of an individual subject document and allows for a wide variety of forms of presentation.
Module 4 stands for the feedback on the development up to this point and is written on the green sheet.
Each of the four modules mentioned above can also be used separately (or in different combinations with the others).
„Reminder and collection“, for example, for the repetition of contents at the end of a lesson, the „guided reflection“ at the end of a practical week, for example, the preparation of a „subject document“ as an alternative to a written paper, „feedback“ following the presentation of a classmate.
In order to achieve the full effectiveness of the respective PerLen-Konzept, the four modules must be considered together.
In the following, the concept will be explained in more detail using school examples. The explanations do not claim to be instructions for teaching. For the implementation with a learning group, practical further training and in-depth study of the concept is usually required.
